The district council is the highest political body of the Potsdam-Mittelmark District. It is elected every five years through local elections and consists of 56 councillors, plus the district administrator as a voting member. Legal foundations

The work of the district council is based on the Local Government Constitution (Kommunalverfassungen) of the Federal State of Brandenburg. The Ministry of the Interior and for Local Affairs of Brandenburg oversees certain decisions – such as changes to administrative boundaries or the renaming of districts.
