Blick auf die Altstadt BelzigBelzig, the district town, is the seat of district administration. As well as Belzig, there are eight other cities in what is otherwise a country district whose landscape is formed by two contrasting areas: in the North the Havelland and in the South the Fläming.

Potsdam-Mittelmark is a district with economic potential.

The economic structure of the region includes a variety of branches ranging from hi-tech enterprises to long-established craft enterprises. Agriculture, forestry, fruit growing, fish farming and a tourism industry catering for unintrusive soft tourism, all combine to give the district, which has ambitious plans to continue developing as an attractive residential and economic location on the outskirts of Berlin, its special character.

Potsdam-Mittelmark has had numerous links with European partners in Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Scotland for years; in the future the development of economic, cultural and touristic links with other European states will su-rely be an important part of the district administration's work.

Local authority districts within the rural district
When the council district structure reform is completed in the Potsdam-Mittelmark rural district there will be five cities not administered by the district, nine municipalities also independent of the district and five offices with twenty-four municipalities administered by them (as of 26 Oct 2003).
